Malaysia Airports is in the process of expanding the passenger terminal and aprons at Penang International Airport, and upgrading its facilities in order to meet a forecast passenger demand for 5 million annual passengers by the year 2016. As part of the Phase 1 expansion plan for the Penang airport Terminal, LEAPP carried out a review of the size of the current passenger terminal building size and a comparison against the spaces recommended for Phase 1, in order to determine the required additional spaces necessary to accommodate the projected busy hour passenger demand. Passenger demand levels and level of service standards, required for arrival and departure passenger flows were taken into account in the analysis, while providing for other facilities such as concessions, lounge areas, toilets, administrative areas, police, clinic, offices etc. The project also addressed the need to increase the number of aircraft parking stands along the terminal frontage, to provide self-manoeuvring stands for a local domestic turboprop operation, and to accommodate helicopters on an adjacent apron.
