Suvarnabhumi International Airport Fifth Runway Study

LEAPP was commissioned by the ICAO TCB to carry out the "5th Runway Safeguarding Study" for Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport for Airports of Thailand Ltd. (AOT). This project was initiated to consider, at a high level, whether the AOT should reserve land outside the present site of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport for expansion of the airport facilities, particularly the runway infrastructure, to accommodate demand up to and beyond that envisaged under the Airport Master Plan. Based on this, the study determined where such site expansion might occur, what might be gained in terms of airside capacity from providing a 5th Runway to supplement the four runways planned under the Master Plan, and how the runway system might be phased The project reviewed the Airport Master Plan and tested various options to increase airside capacity through adding additional runways. While the project envisaged testing the impact on airside capacity, and therefore the future life of the airport, derived from adding a 5th runway, the analysis also considered a 6th runway and the effect that could be gained in terms of runway capacity by developing three wide-spaced sets of dual runways by expanding the airport towards the east onto lands presently used for fish farming.
