Design of Standard Runway End Turnaround Areas

Airside Operational Planning - Apron & Taxiway Planning
Aircraft Manoeuvring Simulation

LEAPP professionals provided assistance to the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations (IFALPA) in the development of a standard design for runway end turnaround areas. With several airport runways not equipped with parallel taxiways, larger aircraft were found to have difficulty negotiating a 180º turn at the end of runways, and this gave rise to a project by IFALPA to prepare a standard design for runway end turnaround areas. LEAPP professionals assisted IFALPA Technical Committee members in developing the parameters and dimensions necessary to accommodate aircraft turning at a runway end.

Preliminary turnaround area desigs were prepared for Aircraft Codes A to F and these were then simulated to ensure adequate clearances and acceptable turning manoeuvring by the respective aircraft.

The project culminated in a set of standard runway end turnaround areas for Aircraft Codes A to F for runways of 30m to 60m in width.

The standards developed by LEAPP professionals for IFALPA are being processed through the ICAO system to ultimately become standards under ICAO Annex 14.
